Gurdwara (Sikh Temle): It means “the doorway to the Guru”. It is a place where followers of the Sikh faith gather to recite and hear the scared scriptures of Guru Granth Sahib (Sikhs Holy Book). Sikh temples welcome people of all colors and creeds. There is no membership fee and no appointment needed to visit a Sikh temple. Most of the Sikh temples are open to the public from 5am to 9pm. Visitors are offered Kara Parshad (sweet blessed food) in the worship hall, which is usually given into the cupped hands of a visitor. Free vegetarian food and tea is served at most of the Gurdwaras (Sikh Temple). Visitors may take Langar (vegetarian food from the community kitchen) at such Gurdwaras as it is regarded as a blessing by the Guru. Visitors normally sit on the floor since everyone is considered equal whilst eating the Langar. Gurdwara holds ultimate sanctity among the Sikhs. It is important to know the respect expected from the visitors to a Gurudwara. Drugs, cigarettes and liquor are strictly prohibited in all Gurdwaras. Individuals intoxicated by such drugs are also prohibited from entering Gurudwara premises. Some Gurudwaras discourage filming by either amateur or professional, unless permission is granted by the committee. Some Gurdwaras prohibit the distribution of political propaganda. Speaking at the stage to the congregation also requires permission from the Gurdwara committee. Visitors should cover their head with a piece of cloth while entering the Sikh Temple. Head is covered as a mark of respect to the Sikh Holy Book (present Guru of Sikhs known as Shri Guru Granth Sahib). Hats are not permitted in Gurdwara premises. Visitors should also remove their shoes at the entrance of the Sikh Temple. Taking off shoes and washing feet at the entrance is considered as a mark of respect to the guru. It also helps in keeping the Gurdwara premises clean.

The city served as a farming community to support Spanish military installations at San Francisco and Monterey. When California gained statehood in 1850, San Jose served as its first capital. After more than 150 years as a small farming city, San Jose and the surrounding Santa Clara Valley became the last (and largest) contiguous area of undeveloped land surrounding the San Francisco Bay. San Jose experienced increased demand for housing from soldiers and veterans returning from World War II. San Jose then continued its aggressive expansion during the 1950s and 1960s by annexing more land area. The rapid growth of the high-technology and electronics industries further accelerated the transition from an agricultural center, to an urbanized metropolitan area. By the 1990s, San Jose’s location within the booming local technology industry earned the city its nickname, Capital of Silicon Valley. San Jose now maintains global city status.
